Friday 5th March 2010 10:05 am
With only 22 days to go until WWF's Earth Hour event, 21 Scottish local authorities have now officially signed up to take part in the lights-off campaign.Almost 90 countries have already pledged to take part in Earth Hour, which aims to bring together over one billion people to switch off the lights for a symbolic hour on 27 March.
In Scotland, the number of local authorities involved has already surpassed 2009 figures. A further 5 councils are keen to get involved, meaning that at least 75 per cent of all Scottish local authorities will be participating and most of the country's iconic buildings and landmarks will switch off their lights on the day.
Scottish local authority involvement in Earth Hour 2010 was picked up last week by the 'News of the World' and several local newspapers and radio stations, and on 4 March, 'Heather the Weather' launched WWF Scotland's official countdown to Earth Hour 2010.
An online map showing how many individuals are signing up in each local authority is due to go online on the official WWF Earth Hour website soon.
