Have Some Pride
In 2009 Keep Scotland Tidy's popular "Have Some Pride" campaign message and its ongoing roadside litter campaign combined to convey the strong message to road users that litter is not acceptable. The campaign aims to appeal to road-users’ sense of national pride and encourage them to help keep our roads litter free.
In partnership with the Scottish Government, Keep Scotland Tidy launched a new general litter campaign in March 2002 under the banner "Have Some Pride".
The campaign involved giant 48 sheet posters being displayed in main cities and traffic hot spots, showing the Scottish saltire flag being defaced with litter.
These were supported by smaller posters, which were available to all local authorities and the general public, to display in local shops, community centres and notice boards.
A computer screensaver of the campaign image was also made available to encourage schools to use this as their standard screensaver.
Bought in Brechin...
As the campaign grew and developed, it was identified that there was a particular need to target vehicle drivers and their passengers specifically, to reduce the amount of litter being created by them. It is estimated that over 100,000 pieces of litter are dropped on Scotland’s roadsides from vehicles each weekend. In 2003 a series of posters, bearing messages such as "Bought in Brechin….. Left in Lanark", were distributed to highlight the widespread nature of the roadside litter problem.
Keep Our Roads Litter Free
In 2005 national trucking companies, local authorities and other interested companies were recruited to display a supporting sticker on the back of their fleet vehicles, displaying the saltire image with the message "Keep Our Roads Litter Free". This coincided with a joint campaign between VisitScotland and Keep Scotland Tidy, which was backed rental firms. The campaign targeted visitors and residents who hire cars to tour Scotland. Half a million degradable "rubbish bags" were distributed via hire companies to help their customers dispose of litter responsibly, either by taking it home or by bagging it and placing it in roadside bins.
Bringing the messages together
In 2006, Keep Scotland Tidy ran bus rear adverts on 840 buses urging drivers to have some pride in their country and dispose of their car litter responsibly by taking it home or waiting until they reached a garage or lay-by to use a litter bin. And in 2009 the popular saltire image was resurrected once again to create car window stickers and fleet vehicle stickers, combining the “Have Some Pride” and "Keep Our Roads Litter Free" messages.
